Battle Lines IV was the first time for a team battle. It saw me partner up with Amanda Rigby while Process Smith joined forces with Arran Macphail. The Big Rig and I met up a few weeks before the event to discuss tactics and we decided to recreate a Christmas dinner scene with a twist. Some saw it as controversial but the Krampus worm was intended respectfully. What do you think, did we overstep the mark? Battle Lines is always a great night out with music, food and art but this was special and as ever Tony Nero captured it all on camera which you can see on the slideshow below. Its the last Friday of every month at The Ostrich if you fancy coming along. Search Battle Lines on Facebook and Instagram for more deets.

Here is a real treat from the archives. Its a short but wonderful timelapse of a wall I painted at the Green Backyard a few years ago. Video courtesy of WilburforceUK. All this time later the wall is still there and being used. Looks a bit worse for wear but wouldn't you if you'd been left outside in the elements for a few years. Photo courtesy of Tony Nero.
Battle Lines is where two artists compete against each other over 90 minutes only using black and white on a board with the crowd and judges deciding who wins at the end. This month saw "Big Rig" Amanda Rigby go up against "Badass Babe" Kate Hawkridge with yours truly and last months winner Arran Macphail judging. It was another epic battle with the regal stippled work of Amanda Rigby up against the fruity sharpness of Kate Hawkridge. As judges we found it very difficult and changed our minds several times but eventually the win went to Kate Hawkridge. Battle Lines is where two artists compete against each other over 90 minutes only using black markers on a white board with the crowd and judge deciding who wins at the end. Usually I don't like adding a competitive element to art as it is completely subjective but I knew I'd be painting alongside my long time compadre Process Smith so I thought it would be fun to do. With no idea what I was going to draw I turned up at The Ostrich Inn with a bag full of Poscas. It was really well attended and had music from Mista Crowe and food from Resist Vegan Kitchen which made for a really busy and entertaining night. Its not important who won the event :) however I was really pleased that my artwork sold on the night to a member of the crowd who had a Korpworm tattooed on his leg. Check the photos below to see. PHOTOS FROM TONY NEROPHOTOS FROM KIRK CHAPMANMassive thanks go out to Prin for organising the event and Simon for letting us take over the venue. Hats off to Process for doing a great job on the other board and a final big thank you to everyone who turned up to support me, as always your support is greatly appreciated.
Next event is scheduled for 27th October, click here to confirm your attendance through Facebook. My favourite paint jam of the year was the Burnham Spray Jam held on the weekend of the 13th/14th August 2016 in the seaside town of Burnham-on-Sea. I was invited by the organiser and all round amazing human Becky Lyons to paint with around another 50 artists all along the high street. My venue was The Coffee Corner Company. Huge thank you to Becky for organising such a great event and Zena for letting me paint all over her coffee shop (and buying korpworm tees for the staff).
Another great weekend at Upfest and this year I got to paint in my own venue. It was a closed down shop that had been taken over by a bar who were hosting a glitter booth, dodgy disco and BBQ so it was a natural fit to squeeze me in there. It was a bit of a goldfish bowl with a massive glass front and a 3.5m wall for me to paint but I got stuck in and painted a small gathering of Korpworms with a leader against a setting sun. I had a slow start so stuck my headphones on and got to work, not as social as previous years but time was short and I needed to make the most of it.
I did get to chat with a few people though, old and new friends, you know who you are, thank you for stopping by, its the best part of the day. Several pieces of free art were dished out to some of the people who were wearing my t-shirts and hoodies but big thanks to everyone that attended in their Korp merch it was great to see so many of my tees walking around the festival. Finally gotta say a massive thank you to the festival organisers for putting on another class event and all the crew and volunteers who make it all run so smooth on the day. Also big thanks to my hosts at Rachels for the beer a food. Always great to see so many friends there just a shame it was all work for me this year with no time to take it all in. Here are a few photos of me in action (I use the term loosely).
In 2013 I was invited down to Southsea for Head Jam. Check out the video.
Want more? There is a nice little write up from Strong Island and some great photos from Simon Rutter. and Matt Maber.
Had a great time at the fund raiser for next years City of Colours Paint Jam in Birmingham. A bunch of us were invited to come and paint for the day with the creations going up for auction later that night. Favourite part was the colab with SPZero76, Paul Monsters, MindControl and Miss Wah...check out the slideshow below to see the finished piece. I did some drawing on a mirror for this year's Collaborate 2015. All done live on Periscope, search for @korporate and follow me for live drawing sessions and paint jams.
Held at Little Johnny Russells in Southsea back in 2010, this was a small paint jam where I collaborated with My Dog Sighs one last time (mainly so we could use up all the paint we bought for Upfest). Back in the day I used to do the stencils.
These photos are from Matt Maber. Find him on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Instagram and Behance. If anyone has any more photos from this event that I can share please get in touch. |
