Last weekend saw an opportunity to take a look around My Dog Sighs art studio as part of the Created in Portsmouth Art and Craft Trail. If you were lucky enough to be local it was a treat for the eyes that not only included the latest from My Dog Sighs but also an insight into the working space of M-One who shares part of the studio and a number of artists including Id-iom and SP Zero 76 who have decorated the walls. If, however, like me you do not live nearby you either had to take a long drive or rely on someone to write a photo heavy blog post about it. Well here it is, a little look around the studio of My Dog Sighs affectionately known as The Dog House.

It would be very easy to just blow you away with photos of all the latest prints and artwork from My Dog Sighs but I wanted to take a closer look so here you will also see some of the more obscure items that are scattered throughout the 4 room studio.

​Lets start by blowing you away with some of his latest artwork and (sold out) prints.

As you walk up the stairs to the studio the first thing you see is the front door adorned with stickers from artists from all over the world.

Turn the corner and you are in the studio.

Moving through into the next room it becomes clear that M-One occupies this area.

Perhaps the most striking part of this area is the huge water feature.

As you can imagine My Dog Sighs inspires a lot of young artists to pick up a brush and start painting. Just like this young enthusiast who only wanted to show MDS his artwork but ended up being offered a piece of original art as a trade.

Couldn't help myself, I had to stage a little photo opportunity.

I love stencil art that pushes the boundaries and that is exactly what you get with the current collection of work on display at the Play Dead gallery by finger ninja M-One. The title of the show is "Look Back Move Forward" which refers to the fact that you do not (should not) need to reinvent yourself completely in order to develop as an artist. For this show what M-One has done is take several of his past stencils and give them a new lease of life.  So you'll still see the cars and vans daubed in graffiti and the birds with their delicately cut feathers but there is added depth and maturity to this body of work. What appears to be a random stroke of a spray can or ink splatter is actually perfectly controlled to add to the overall composition and his ability to create layers of drips within drips leaves me full of envy. His colour choice is on point with the traditional mix of peacock and kingfisher blues with an orange or yellow accent but for me the exciting part is how the striking red on the albino peacock takes over in what I view as a potential farewell to the trusted blue colour palette. Only time will tell.

​M-One once again shows his human side by not only inviting young art enthusiast Maddox Deavin-Lee to exhibit alongside him but ​he also held a sealed bids auction which resulted in £400 being donated to a local foodback. ​I'm a stencil artist at heart but previous limits on my time meant that the protracted aspect of hand cutting stencils took a back seat. However I made an exception for the Play Dead show and put in the hours to produce a stencil piece of a Robin Williams photo, not only was it a great image it also linked seamlessly into the theme of the show being about hidden mental illness.

I'm both pleased and saddened to have recently sold this piece but I know the buyer well so I'll be dropping round to stare in those eyes from time to time.
